Goals for 2025
In order to get results, I need to set clear goals, and I often prefer measurable ones. In this post, I aim to do just that.
Ultimate goal (reminder)
As I mentioned in a previous post, my ultimate goal is to achieve geographical freedom and generate $200K per year in passive income through a portfolio of apps.
Ideal user count for the ultimate goal: 111K MAU
Based on the $200K per year target, I decided to derive an ideal user count to aim for. Why user count instead of a dollar amount? While a dollar amount would be more direct, acquiring users is a necessary step toward generating revenue, and I can always switch to measuring MRR once I start monetizing the apps.
To calculate the ideal user count, I need to make one key assumption: My existing app currently generates about $1.1K MRR from 7.5K MAU, which is roughly $0.15 MRR/MAU. For the sake of a quick and reasonable calculation, I’ll assume the same ratio holds for the new apps.
Based on this assumption:
- To generate $200K ARR, I need $16.7K MRR.
- To generate $16.7K MRR, I’d need about 111K MAU (based on $0.15 MRR/MAU).
Ideal user count for 2025: 6,000 MAU total
This part is tricky. Of course, it would be amazing if I could reach 111K MAU by the end of 2025, but I don’t think that’s realistic, especially since I’m working part-time on this project. Sure, it’s possible that one of the new apps goes viral and hits 111K MAU, but that would require luck and involve many factors beyond my control.
To come up with a more realistic target, I can focus on what I’ve experienced and what I can control. This would help me stay action-focused and let any upside surprises happen naturally.
For my first app, it once grew from 200 to 2,000 monthly downloads over a 6-month period, mostly through ASO efforts. If I repeat this process across three apps, that would mean a combined 6,000 monthly downloads. For simplicity, let’s ignore retention for now and assume 6,000 monthly downloads roughly equates to 6,000 MAU — or about 2,000 MAU per app.
Launch 3 apps by June
Knowing the MAU target is a good start. Now, I need a timeline.
The growth example above was based on a 6-month period, which highlights an important factor: time in the App Store.
Since I won’t have a large marketing budget, having apps available longer in the App Store will help accumulate users and move closer to the 2,000 MAU goal.
If I want each app to have at least 6 months to grow, I need to launch all three by June.
Goals for 2025
- Launch 3 apps by June
- Grow each app to 2,000 MAU by the end of the year
